Introduction

Welcome to the web-site for PFS-Defrag!  I hope you choose to download and try the program and find it useful.  Click the links at the top to access the different parts of this web-site.

What is PFS?

"PFS" stands for "Professional Filing System".  It is a replacement filing system for the Amiga which has a number of advantages over FFS such as speed, safety and no 4GB limit.  It has been recently updated to version 3 and is available from many Amiga dealers.  For further information visit the Greed (the publishers) web-site, but not until you've had a look around here!

Important: (Note added on 24th November 2001)
Please note that I no longer use PFS as I have found it to be inefficient and regularly unsafe in a number of circumstances.  For over 6 months I have been regularly using the free "Smart Filesystem (SFS)" software and have experienced no problems and 0% data loss.  Consequently, I have now banished PFS from my system for good.  As such, I will no longer support or develop the PFS-Defrag software (it is over a year since the last release and/or user feedback).  However, I can still recommend using PFS-Defrag if you continue to use PFS - PFS-Defrag itself will never cause you to lose data.

I strongly recommend trying SFS (it has been updated considerably since the last Aminet releases).  Visit the original author's page to download older versions, or the current author's page to get the latest (1.193 appears to work fantastically!).

What is PFS-Defrag?

Some files on your hard disk partitions can get fragmented.  This means that instead of being stored in one continuous space they are split into "fragments".  This slows down disk access to these files.  PFS-Defrag uses a safe, high-level routine to attempt to defragment fragmented files on your PFS partitions.  It will work with hard disk partitions formatted with PFS-II or PFS3.  The program has been extensively beta-tested to iron out any problems.  It has been at the stage for a considerable amount of time where I am happy to run it on my own hard disk without making any back-up first.

Where do I get this wonder software? ;)

Right here, on this web-site.  And it costs nothing (although I'd appreciate an e-mail to tell me you like it).  For further information, look at the Screenshots page which gives you an illustrated tour of a PFS-Defrag session.  Or you may want to just go straight to the Downloads page and get the software now (go on do it, but have a look around this web-site as well!).

I hope you find this software useful!

Best regards,
Keith Halstead
